Tips for renting a car in Rhodes Island 07/02/2018

Finding the best car rental deals is far different than hunting for good airplane tickets or good accommoadtion rates.

Most travelers do not give car rental shopping the same scrutiny as airfares or room rates, but hidden charges can make your ground transportation costs mount. It's worth a closer look.

Many travelers operate under the misconception that car rental rates are all about the same, and that shopping is a waste of time. Rates do vary--sometimes by quite a bit--between companies and destinations. Another truth: car rental companies reward people who make life easy for them and penalize those who don't know the ropes.

What follows are five tips yoiu should read if you are looking to rent a car in Rhodes Island, in no particular order, for lowering your car rental expenses and getting the best possible car rental deal.

1. Insurance

Take a good look at the insurance policy the car rental company provides with its contracts. At minimum you should be given CDW, theft insurance and 24/7 road support.

2. Rates

Plan ahead. Dont wait until last minute to book your car. As close as you get to the pick up date the more expensive the deal you will find will be. Try to plan ahead and book your car as soon as possible.

3. Choosing a Vehicle

Think carefully about what kind of vehicle you’ll need. If you’re traveling with children or with a lot of gear, you may want a large sedan or SUV. If you’re simply looking to save money on rental rates and gas, you’ll want to reserve the smallest available model.

Always take a look of the vehicle for any damages. If you find any be sure to tell the rental company about the damage so there isn't any miss understanding.

4. Beware of Hidden Fees and Extras

If the rental company has to top-off the gas tank after your return, you will pay a ridiculous price per gallon. Always ask that the car be filled up prior to your departure, and then bring it back full of gas. If that's not allowed without a fee, be certain you return the vehicle with as much gas in the tank as when you started.

5. Choose local car rental companies

Local car rental companies will offer you more personalized services and will give you a lot of helpful tips because they know the island better. Also it is unlikely to come across hidden fees and other stressful situations because most of them are family businesses that doesn’t think and work like the big international names of the industry. The prices you will get from local car rental companies are usually the same and sometimes even cheaper than the prices you will get from the big brands. You will also be giving some extra money to a local family and not to a big international firm.
